Guide to Great Legs for Summer

Now that Christmas is over & done with, are you wishing away the winter and finding your mind wandering to warmer climes? No matter how scaly, fuzzy or flabby they become in the off-season, with a little effort you can whip your legs back into summer shape.  Here is the Skin Revival Guide to Great Legs.

Soft and Smooth

Shaving and waxing our legs becomes another high-priority item in our busy schedules during the Summer months.  Laser hair removal treatments mean you have one less thing to worry about.  Your legs could stay hair-free with minimal effort.  Look out for real laser hair removal instead of IPL hair removal, for a virtually pain-free experience. As an added bonus to hair free legs, laser hair removal helps with texture and tone as hair follicles are reduced, leaving skin looking more even.

It is important to start your laser hair removal treatment in good time.  A course of 6 laser hair removal treatments at 6 week intervals is recommended for optimum results so start your treatments now to ensure you are ready for Summer.

Having hair-free legs is just the start.  Here are our other tips for great Summer legs.

Exfoliate

Dry skin builds up over the winter months so a good exfoliator is a must.  Apply your exfoliator in a circular motion, rinse with warm water and then with cold.  Exfoliating leaves your legs primed and polished, ready to absorb the moisturiser.  You can make your own natural exfoliating scrub with by mixing olive oil and sea salt into a paste and adding a squeeze of lemon juice.

Moisturise

Exfoliating can leave the skin feeling dry so it is important to apply a moisturiser immediately after exfoliating. Once in the morning after a shower, and once before you go to bed.  Skin Revival Recommends Medik8’s Hydr8 Body, not only is this an excellent skin hydrator it also relieves sunburn as well as restoring suppleness and softness, leaving your skin feeling revitalised with a natural glow!

Eliminate Cellulite

There are many lotions and potions on the market claiming to get rid of cellulite but truth is a healthy diet, drinking lots of water and exercise are most important, one very effective treatment which is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage such as cuts, burns and other abrasions is micro needling.

The micro needles penetrate the top layers of the skin and create pin-point injuries in the deeper layers, this triggers the body’s natural wound healing response, as a result new collagen and elastin are formed which in turn reduce wrinkle depth, increase skin elasticity and improve the appearance of scars and other skin flaws.

Used in conjunction with retinol, which increases collagen & makes dimpling less pronounced micro needling has proved time and time again to be extremely effective in the battle against cellulite.

Tanning

Having evenly tanned legs makes all the difference in Summer and can also make your legs look more toned.

If all else fails, turn to fake tan, which will not only mask unsightly cellulite, but also mimic a sleeker silhouette all over. If you’re in a real hurry, an instant tan like Rimmel Instant Tan Sexy Legs, from £5, is the quickest way to slimmer pins.

No matter which fake tan you use, it’s only as good as the canvas you work from. To prep your skin for a perfect tan, hit the shower with an exfoliator.  Avoid oil-based scrubs as the oil can act as a barrier against the tan adhering to skin. If you shave your legs, try to do so the day before applying your tan, this is to make sure that your skin isn’t too sensitised and reactive to the tanning formulation.  Once you’ve dried off, dab rough areas of skin – elbows, knees, ankles, hands, wrists – with some moisturiser, this will stop the tan from catching and building up on these patches.  Another good tip is if you’re tanning your face, moisturise your hairline for the same reason!

Tan the large areas of the body first: the limbs, stomach and back, then focus in on the feet, ankles, knees and neck. If you see the tan darken too much in these areas as it develops, simply grab a towel and buff the colour down.  Always make sure you use a mitt so that your hands stay a natural looking colour.

There are a head-spinning number of tan brands and formulas on offer. Generally, the traditional creams are the most moisturising option, however they’re usually non-tinted so you need to take extra care to not miss any spots.

Tinted gels are easy to use, although you need to work them in quickly before they “set”, and some skins might find them a little drying. Spray tans are great for topping-up a tan, if you need a little extra colour on your chest or legs before you go out. Finally, there’s mousse. This tends to be the easiest and most popular of all the tanning variants, due to its easy application.

To make sure your tan lasts, you need to stay hydrated, we suggest drinking lots of water and applying moisturiser daily.

If all the above advice sounds too much like hard work, you’ll be happy to know there is an effective and easy alternative: gradual tanner. Think the love child of a fake tan and a body cream. Because this type of formulation features less DHA than traditional tans – not to mention more moisturising agents – it is less likely to streak. This means you can just slather it on – no prep work required – and find yourself with a gorgeous sun-kissed glow within hours. Wear Heels

It’s the oldest trick in the book, but it really works!  Wearing heels really helps make short legs look so much longer and slimmer.  If you struggle in 5 inch heels, try something with a 2 or 3 inch heel – it will have the same effect, whilst providing extra comfort.

Squats and Calf Raises

A few quick sets of each of these daily really will make all the difference in sculpting your legs.  The great thing about these exercises is that you can squeeze a few sets in wherever you are.  No excuses, start now!

To enhance your calf muscles:  Stand straight with feet about hip-width apart.  Raise your heels and balance on your tiptoes.  You can lean against a wall for extra support.  Hold this for a minute and repeat.  Do 3 sets of 10 to 15.

To enhance your bum:  Stand straight with feet about hip-width apart.  Lower your body into a squat position, so that the hips are lower to the ground than the knees.  Push yourself back upright with your legs.  Do 3 sets of 10 to 15.
