Acne Scarring

There are many types of acne and severe cases can result in acne scarring. The damage caused to the skin and its appearance can impact a great deal on an individual’s confidence and self-esteem.

Causes of Acne Scarring

As acne resolves it can leave long-lasting damage to the skin where it appears.  See our acne information page, including our recommendations for treating acne here.

Types of Acne Scarring

  • Ice-pick: These scars appear as deep pits and can give the skin the appearance of being punctured by an ice-pick.
  • Boxcar: These are angular scars with sharp vertical edges. They are found mostly on the cheeks and temples and can be shallow or deep.
  • Rolling: These scars can give the skin a wave-like appearance and occur due to the damage under the skin.
  • Hypertropic: These scars appear raised and lumpy and can also appear on the back and chest. They occur as a result of cysts and nodules and can decrease in size over time.
