Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that occurs equally in men and women. It can occur at any age but generally occurs in adults under 35 years of age. It can be seen as defined red plaques (red, flaky, crusty patches of skin) varying in size and shape and covered with white or silvery scales.

The most commonly affected areas are the elbows, knees, nails, scalp and lower back, however it can appear anywhere on the body.

The severity of Psoriasis can vary from person to person and for some it can have a major impact on the overall quality of life of the individual.

The body’s immune system appears to be involved when psoriasis occurs and it is thought it attacks healthy skin cells by mistake. The process by which the body produces skin cells is accelerated. Skin cells are normally made and replaced every 3-4 weeks but in psoriasis this process may only take 3-7 days. This leads to a build-up of skin cells which creates the patches typically seen in psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic long-standing disease which usually involves periods where a person can be virtually symptomless and then be followed by periods where the symptoms are severe.
