How does LED Phototherapy work?

As a result of ageing, problem skin conditions or trauma, healthy cells are compromised and unable to renew themselves normally. Our skin has the ability to absorb certain wavelengths of light and use it as a source of energy to activate specific cellular processes to produce a therapeutic effect. It is a natural biochemical reaction similar to that of plant photo-synthesis.

Dermalux Phototherapy Treatments for Ageing & Damaged Skin

The skins metabolism and natural functions start declining from the age of 25. Structural and functional changes occur within the dermis layer (supporting layer) and the epidermis (outer most layer of skin). Ageing means that the cells of our skin are unable to renew themselves properly and over time the skins natural protective hydro lipid film (acid mantle) is weakened. This results in dry complexion, wrinkles, sensitivity and loss of elasticity.

From 40 to 45 years hormone activity usually decreases resulting in less sebum production (drier skin) and the skin becomes thinner making it more vulnerable to damage caused by environmental factors. The collagen fibres in the dermis begin to decrease in number, stiffen and break apart. The elastin fibres lose some of their elasticity and break down. In people who are regularly exposed to ultraviolet light or who smoke, the loss of elasticity is greatly accelerated. Constant facial expressions also cause expression lines to form.

How does LED Phototherapy treat Ageing Skin?

Collagen, elastin and reticulin fibres are produced by cells called fibroblasts. Collagen is a major component of connective tissue and is the most common protein found in the body. Collagen is the essential protein for wound healing and is used to repair and replace damaged tissue. It is the substance that holds cells together and has a high degree of elasticity. By increasing collagen production, less scar tissue will be formed at the injured site.

During an LED Phototherapy session, wavelengths of Red and Near Infra-Red light are absorbed by the fibroblast cells stimulating the energy producing mitochondria (the cells power producer) into producing more ATP.

This in turn stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen and growth factors, which increases skin thickness, reduces lines and wrinkles and improves scar tissue. The increased elastin levels produced improve skin elasticity and the increase in reticulin fibres gives greater support structure within the dermis.

After a series of LED treatments, fibroblasts can continue to produce new collagen for several months. LED can suppress collagenase, a collagen degrading enzyme that can accelerate the skins ageing process.

Dermalux for Acne & Problem Skin

From teenage breakouts to adult acne, this is a skin condition that effects up to 80% of people in varying degrees at some point during their life.

Acne is an inflammatory condition and occurs when the oil-secreting sebaceous glands in the skin become inflamed or infected due to a blockage in the hair follicles. The infected glands can appear on the face, neck, back and body which cause blemishes such as black heads and spots to appear on the surface of the skin. If left untreated, acne can often leave scarring.

Overactive sebaceous glands are stimulated by a change in hormonal levels and this can be triggered by a number of factors including age, genetics, stress, lifestyle or dietary changes. The increase in oil production combined with a build-up of dead skin cells block the pore and create the perfect oxygen deprived environment for the P.acnes bacteria to thrive.

There are two main types of acne, non-inflammatory acne and inflammatory acne. The first is a mild form typically characterised by white heads which are closed plugged oil glands and blackheads, which are open plugged oil glands. Inflammatory acne presents as pustules, which are red inflamed, infected plugged oil glands. In severe cases, cysts (large fluid-filled bumps) may develop under the skin.

How does LED Phototherapy treat Acne?

It has long been known that exposure to sunlight can improve acne and blemishes however we also know that ultraviolet light which forms part of sunlight is harmful to the skin. Visible blue light at 415nm, which is outside of the UV range, is clinically proven to kill acne bacteria and is therefore safe for treating all types of acne and problem skin. Essentially visible blue light provides all the antibacterial benefits associated with UV but without the harmful and damaging rays.

With acne, the sebaceous glands and hair follicles become dilated and obstructed due to genetic or hormonal influences. This obstruction leads to the increased production of bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (P. acne) within the sebaceous glands.

P.acne bacteria naturally produce porphyrins (Coproporphyrin III) which absorb light energy at the near UV and blue light spectrum. Exposure to blue light at 415nm excites the P.acnes bacteria making it very photosensitive. A chemical reaction occurs in which highly reactive free radicals are generated resulting in bacterial destruction and in turn reduction in acne lesions and blemishes. Furthermore, the immune system stops producing inflammatory chemicals to kill bacteria because the bacteria are already dead.

Blue light can successfully treat all grades of acne without irritation and is an effective alternative for clients who do not respond to other acne treatments or have become antibiotic resistant. It is particularly suitable for darker skins, teenage skin and stubborn cystic acne.

Mild to Moderate Acne: 12 combined Blue, Red and Near Infra-Red LED treatments, up to 3 sessions per week for 3 weeks followed by once weekly.

Dermalux Phototherapy Treatments for Eczema

Eczema is a mild to chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by itchiness, redness and the presence of small blisters that may be dry or weep if the surface is scratched.

Eczema is non-contagious, the cause may be genetic or due to internal and external influences. It can cause scaly and thickened skin, mainly in the creases of limbs such as the elbows and backs of knees.

How Does Phototherapy Treat Eczema?

Traditionally, UV Phototherapy has been used to successfully treat a wide range of inflammatory skin disorders including Eczema. LED Phototherapy offers a clinically proven and UV free alternative to improve and often clear the inflammatory symptoms, accelerate healing, help to prevent bacterial infection, relieve itchiness and reduce or eliminate the need for topical steroids.

Red and Near Infra-Red wavelengths have a positive effect on the immune system which is often reduced in sufferers of Eczema. Exposing the affected area to these beneficial wavelengths for specified amounts of time, helps to counteract the exaggerated immune response that causes the inflammation.

Dermalux Phototherapy Treatments for Rosacea

It is a chronic inflammatory disease of the face in which the skin appears abnormally red. The onset is gradual and begins with what first seems like a tendency to blush easily, a red complexion or an extreme sensitivity to topical products. The redness appears in a characteristic butterfly pattern across the nose and cheeks and may be accompanied by dry flaky patches. As the condition progresses, there may be papules and pustules present yet rosacea is rarely accompanied by comedones. As the symptoms of rosacea can look like those of acne, it is a condition that is often diagnosed.

Stinging and burning sensations are common and the skin will often feel dry and tight. Aggravating factors include heat, environmental aggravators such as UV, alcohol, spicy food, hormones, and stress.

How Does Phototherapy Treat Rosacea?

Clinical studies have proven that LED light in the Red and Near Infra-Red range has an anti-inflammatory and healing effect for rosacea suffers and can offer immediate relief from the chronic symptoms. Where acne is also present, the introduction of LED Blue light is also beneficial to destroy bacteria without irritation.

Rosacea sufferers have a reduced capacity to counteract the negative effect of environmental factors, in particular free radicals and therefore experience an increased inflammatory response and skin damage. Red and Near Infra-Red LED Phototherapy has the ability to increase the levels of an enzyme which effectively has an anti-oxidant effect in the skin to neutralise the free radicals.

Over a course of treatment, the skin becomes more resilient and the immunity of the skin is restored. Furthermore, circulation is improved by an increase in the formation of new capillaries. These additional blood vessels replace damaged ones allowing more oxygen and nutrients to become readily available to speed up the healing process.
